The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round training and athletic competition in a variety of well-coached Olympic-type sports for all mentally retarded children and adults, thus giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, prepare for entry into school and community sports programs, express courage, experience joy, and participate in the sharing of gifts, skills, and friendships with their families, other Special Olympians, and the community
