How do I login to the CMU computers?

Logging in to CMU computers at a cluster or library

1. Choose a browser like Internet Explorer, Firefox or Netscape

2. Enter your Andrew I.D. name and Password that was given to you.

Example: Login: sallym
Pswd: engineer2

3. Make sure you log on to the ANDREW.CMU.EDU (Kerberos Realm)

4. To LOGOUT: Click Start>Log off

Logging in to CMU computers from HOME or remotely…

1. Point your browser to: http://search.library.cmu.edu/rooms/portal/page/23287_Off_Campus_Wireless_Access
2. Click on WebVPN
3. Login with your Andrew Username and Password.
4. Click on CMU Library. (You can input a URL of your choice into the box marked Enter Web Address.)

How do I evaluate websites????

1. Accuracy = Is the information reliable and error-free? Can I contact someone who checks the information?
2. Authority = Is there an author? Is the page signed? Can you determine the domain origin of the page?
3. Objectivity = Is the information factual or opinion? View any webpage as would an commercial on television.
4. Currency = Is the page dated? Is so, when was the last update? How current are the links?
5. Coverage = Is it free, or is there a fee, to obtain information? Sometimes webpages are just-for-fun or outright silliness.

Tips on writing my project paper....

Paragraph and Composition Development

Unity – a quality achieved when all the sentences or paragraphs work together as a unit to express or support one main idea.

Coherence – a quality achieved when all the ideas are clearly arranged and connected.

Transitional words and phrases – connect ideas in a paragraph or composition by showing how ideas and details are related. Most incoherent passages are a result of thinking in single sentences rather than whole paragraphs. When an author writes a sentence, stops, thinks, and then writes another sentence, he/she loses the feeling of continuity. Writing in spurts and pauses leads to omitting significant links or details of thought and thus leaves gaps in writing.

Transitional words or phrases are placed at or near the beginning of a sentence or clause to signal the relationship between the new sentence and the one before it.

To introduce an illustration:thus, for example, for instance, to illustrate

To add a similar idea:secondly, again, also, finally

To point a contrast/qualification:on the other hand, nevertheless, still, however, on the contrary

To indicate a conclusion or result:therefore, in conclusion, to sum up, in other words.

TIP: Use the OUTLINE form handed out in the library research class to help you structure your paper content!

MLA – Modern Language Association - Formatting

Basic Rules

Begin your Works Cited page on a separate page at the end of your research paper. It should have the same one-inch margins and last name, page number header as the rest of your paper.
Label the page Works Cited (do not underline the words Works Cited or put them in quotation marks) and center the words Works Cited at the top of the page.
Double space all citations, but do not skip spaces between entries.

One Author

Lastname, Firstname. Title of Book. Place of Publication: Publisher, Year of Publication.

· More Than One Author

First author name is written last name first; successive author names are written first name, last name.

A Lecture or Speech

Include speaker name, title of the speech (if any) in quotes, details about the meeting or event where the speech was given, including its location and date of delivery.Label the speech according to its type, e.g., Guest Lecture, Keynote Address, State of the Union Address.
