Article Databases
Carnegie Mellon University Libraries holds 100s of subscriptions to article databases and 1000s of subscriptions to periodicals in paper and online, including about 100 subscriptions to architecture periodicals.
Research Tips
- Search article databases to find citation information (i.e. author, title, journal name, date, etc.) for articles published in periodicals. Some article databases include full-text articles. Most article databases are specialized by discipline. Many databases will require WebVPN for access if you are on wireless or off campus.
- Use databases for architecture to search for articles in architecture periodicals.
- Use additional selected databases for related disciplines to search for articles in fields such as art, design, engineering, business, computation, psychology, technology, and so forth. For additional databases see Databases by Subject.
Try MetaLib to search multiple article databases (and library catalogs) simultaneously. Beta version.- Use Ulrich's Periodicals Directory if you want to learn which database includes articles from a specific periodical. Search on the periodical title. Then choose the <Abstracting/Indexing & Article Access> tab.
- Electronic full-text articles may be available through some databases and through Carnegie Mellon's online subscriptions to some periodicals (e-Journals). Full-text articles may or may not include illustrations.
- Choose the <Advanced Search> interface for more flexible searching that will often lead to better results.
- To locate an article from a database search note the name of the periodical, the volume number and date of the issue that you need, and the page numbers of the article. When using the Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals look for the line that says <In:>. See sample citation.
- Use
to learn about ways to obtain an article. When there is no Get It button, search for the periodical in Cameo by choosing a <Periodical Title> search and entering the name of the periodical.
- Carnegie Mellon recieves a wide variety of U.S. and foreign architectural periodicals. See Architecture Journals list. Most periodicals owned by Carnegie Mellon are found on the third floor of Hunt Library.
- Carnegie Mellon may not own the periodical issue that you need. Articles that Carnegie Mellon does not own in paper or electronic full-text may be requested through Interlibrary Loan.
