Nathaniel Dene Hoffman

about me

I'm currently a graduate student at Carnegie Mellon University studying physics, particularly medium energy particle interactions at the GlueX experiment at Jefferson Labs. I'm in my second year at CMU, and I primarily use this site as a common link to my CV, GitHub, publications, and other projects, including my blog.

I grew up in a small town called Washington, Missouri. I have wanted to study physics since I was in kindergarten, and now I'm trying to get a doctorate! I also play violin, cook/bake, and I can solve a Rubik's cube in under a minute (not going pro anytime soon). I'm fascinated with foreign languages, and I know enough French and Spanish to survive, but I'm trying to learn German and Italian.

RESEARCH INTERESTS

Sigma Baryon Photoproduction

The structure of the sigma baryons is under much debate, and many predicted resonances don't seem to show up in experiment. Why is this? We don't know!

Exotic Meson Photoproduction

I'm particularly interested in f-mesons which decay into kaons. There is one too many of these particles with J=0 and many potential theories as to why this is.

Machine Learning

Most of my research is just glorified data science, so I am looking at ways to apply technologies like machine learning to help me understand my data.
