Background on an industry

• Standard & Poor's Industry Surveys: NetAdvantage database
• MarketLine database from Datamonitor - use Industry page
• Industry section of Business & Company Resource Center - use both Overviews and Market Research tabs
• Trade association website for your industry – find it in online Encyclopedia of Associations , or googling key words (i.e. "marketing association".) Other sources: valuationresources.com's industry links; Google's Directory: Associations by Industry. When you've found your association's website, look for links to research, data, publications, statistics, conference proceedings, etc.
• For articles on smaller, niche industries, use the “News Sources” section below
• Industry statistics from U.S. Census Bureau’s Economic Programs.

NAICS and SIC Codes

The North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) and the Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) code systems classify industries numerically. They are often used to categorize business information by industry; many of the resources listed above use them.

Demographics and market information

• Factfinder.census.gov – data from national level down to block level
• Statistical Abstract of the United States
• ESRI Community Tapestry - market segmentation: describes lifestyles of populations in each zipcode.
• New Strategist publications, i.e. Who's Buying: Executive Summary of Household Spending,
  Best Customers: Demographics of Consumer Demand (Hunt Ref HC79 .C6 R87 2006)

Background on companies

• Hoover's Online - includes U.S. public and private, and international companies; company leadership, history and description, financials, products, etc.
• Business & Company Resource Center - company chronologies, histories and journal articles grouped by business functions like marketing, R&D, strategy, etc.
• (Don't forget there are books on major companies as well.)

News sources about companies and industries: (There is considerable overlap among these, but also many unique items in each one.)

• Proquest – wide-ranging news, management, and industry database
• Business & Company Resource Center – news and journal articles; also company histories, analyst reports, industry overviews and market share.
• Lexis-Nexis Academic– has wide-ranging international, national and local news and trade publications;
