Places to Live: Off-Campus
Pittsburgh is made up of several neighborhoods each with its own pros and cons. Here is a description of the most popular ones for CMU Off-campus Living:
Oakland: This neighborhood is largely dominated by the University of Pittsburgh, hospitals, and Carnegie Musuems. Also, CMU, however, CMU is very close to the border of Squirrel Hill.
Housing in South Oakland (north of the Blvd of the Allies, South of Forbes) is generally of low quality and it is not recommended to walk around S. Oakland at night and can be quite noisy on weekends.
However, its close proximity to CMU and Pitt as well as a number of shops and restaurants makes it convenient for many undergrads. It also is a cheap alternative to dorms.
North Oakland is a safer, quieter choice and about a ten-minute walk from campus. This area is also close to shops on Craig Street and Center. Housing is not recommended south of Blvd. of
the Allies or the Hill District, north of Oakland and east of downtown.

Shadyside: This neighborhood is sometimes considered the "prestige" neighborhood: so, the rents are
higher for smaller apartments. Shadyside is north of Fifth and east of Morewood. There is an upscale shopping district
along Walnut Street. The burglary rate there is the highest in the city, but violent crimes are low. The north edge, where it merges with East Liberty
is not very nice. This neighborhood is probably one of the quitests.

Squirrel Hill:This is a stately old neighborhood filled with large, comfortable houses in various states of repair.
It is well within walking or biking distance of CMU with many bus routes to Oakland and downtown. Also, Lots of shops and restuarants in the area. Many apartments in houses or the houses
themselves can be found for rent in this area, if you prefer a house over a large apartment building
