CMU Science Fiction & Fantasy Society

The Science Fiction & Fantasy Society is an organization of Carnegie-Mellon-affiliated people (the usual: students, staff, faculty, and the folks who just won't leave) who like to read works of science fiction and/or fantasy. We have "nonfunded recognition" from Student Senate.

we want you

We are looking for interested people like you. We've got members and activities and constitution/bylaws and officers and all that good stuff, but we want MORE of it ALL (except the bylaws; passing them once was more than enough.)

Phase 1 of our Glorious Five Year Plan is complete - we have non-funded recognition. In Phase 2 we must continue to infiltrate the campus. Prepare to be boarded.

when's the next meeting?

To Be Determined (after a poll of the membership) but the first meeting of the Fall 2002 semester will most likely be in the week after the activities fair (i.e. week of Sept 16).

regularly scheduled activities

Business meetings, if you can call them that, are on the Second [MUMBLE]day Of Every Month (in the spring 2002 semester they were 6 pm on the Second Tuesday Of Every Month.)

Filk and Cookies sing-alongs are currently at 6 pm on the Fourth Wednesday of Every Month, unless otherwise amended. In practice "Every Month That We Feel Like It" so check for announcements.

irregularly scheduled activities

The Distributed Virtual Library has several branches. SFFS members can borrow books from the main branch which (pending completion of the Glorious Five Year Plan) is currently in Wean 1305. The other branches are the private collections of members who are willing to lend books to some responsible reasonable type people.
You can also provide book reviews if you like.

Reading groups: read and talk about some interesting book. Usually the way this works is, someone suggests a book, and some other people decide they would like to read it, and lo, there is a reading group and they decide when to meet. (The chair's job is to jump-start this process now and then.)
Chair of book discussion: We need a new chair. Thanks to Eli Brandt for chairing this group in the past.

Writing group: for anyone who would be interested in exchanging and critiquing manuscripts. The writing group is actively looking for additional members. We know more of you are interested in this and you're just shy. So respond to the bboard post / email the chair.
Chair of writing group: Alex Groce, agroce@cs.cmu.edu
Meetings: TBA, probably some night at 8pm. Email if you're interested in joining.

Storytelling: will be moving to a new time and location. Check the bboard and email Valerie if you're interested in attending and have a preference for time.
Chair of storytelling: Valerie Kaplan

Movie nights - Irregularly scheduled SF/F movie nights in WeH 4623 or similar venue.

Strange board games - this usually happens at the Durin's Day party in October.

Ceremonial reading of The Eye of Argon - whenever you least expect it.

how to find out what we're up to

Subscribe to our b-board: assocs.science-fiction-society (that is the newsgroup cyrus.assocs.science-fiction-society if you are in CS-land).

There is a mailing list for meeting announcements (really low traffic), and a mailing list for people who want more chatter but don't want to read the bboard. Send us your request to be placed on either or both. (Mail sent to either list also goes to the b-board.)
