Concanavalin A Structure
Concanavalin A (2cna.pdb) is a plant sugar-binding protein (lectin).
The b-barrel is similar to that found in prealbumin and is termed a "jelly roll motif" here. The b-strands are all antiparallel.

The starting Display is Cartoons; the Color is Group.
The amino and carboxyl termini are labeled.
The Ca2+ and Mn2+ ions are Spacefill.
Viewing Tip: The aliphatic amino acids (Ala, Ile, Leu, and Val) are highlighted (button) in green Spacefill; the other 16 amino acids are shown as Sticks with a red dot surface. The hydrophobic core between the two b-sheets is especially rich in the branched chain amino acids. Choose Slab Mode under Options from the Chime menu and slab through the structure to see the compact hydrophobic core.
