Skepticism
I know only my experience, so I have to imagine yours
A traditional skeptical argument
Not skepticism of lst Meditation, but skepticism about other minds
How can I know
1 that you have similar experience
2 that you have any experience
Argument for 1.
Maybe your experience of seeing red is like mine of seeing blue
and vice versa
How could I ever know, if you identified colors correctly
One reply: if there is no such observable difference, why think this is even imaginable
Really are asking; imagine you could look into my mind and see my experience
but that is impossible
A real objection to Descartes he encourages this impossible way of thinking
A fuller theory of color might destroy this analysis. Talking, say, about color relationships
I don't take up that point
Argument for 2:
Why think that you have any experience?
You pick out blue, red objects and that skill we can talk about
You could be an automaton for all I know
If we are rejecting Descartes's view of reason
I can only observe your behavior, not know that you are conscious
