3.You have an 8-bit
analog-to-digital converter that divides its input range of 0-5 volts
into 256 “buckets”. If the signal is
steady and quiet, then every measurement goes into the same bucket. Why, under these circumstances, might
you actually want to add some noise to the input?
This trick, and the complementary trick of adding noise to a
digital-to-analog converter’s output, is called “dither”. You see it mentioned in ads for CD music
players, etc. Why might you want to do this too?
