Phantom of the Attic is located a couple of blocks from
campus. (Go down Forbes towards Pitt, take a right on Craig, it's
on the left up a small set of red stairs). Phantom is
probably your first choice to find anything comics and gaming related.
They have a decent supply of RPGs, and have a decent mix of games.
Jeff, the owner, is very nice and can special order quite a bit if
he doesn't have it in stock.
Games Unlimited is down in Squirrel Hill. (Go on
Forbes away from Pitt, Forbes will curve around a bit. Go right on
Murray, it's about halfway down the hill on the left). Games
Unlimited has a very big selection of all types of games (RPGs,
wargames, beer and pretzels, party games, gambling equipment, darts,
you name it). Their selection is good, some of the employees are nice.
They aren't as cheap as Phantom, but they have quite a few harder to
find games (I picked up my copy of Blue Max there. Don't ask me how
they got a copy after it was out of print for over a year...)
If you are into mail Order or European (or other hard to find
games), try Games People Play in Cambridge. (617)-492-0711.
Carl J. Schnurr also recommends Games Scape (415)-621-4263. I've never
done business with the latter.
Of course, if you want to do a big European order, we'll probably be
doing on again later this year from...
Just Games in London. If you really must have a lot
of EuroGames, this is the place. Call 0114471-437-0761. Ask for Mark.
Games People Play orders through them. Whether you'll save money be buying
cheaper and paying shipping or going through GPP is your guess. Just Games
is more likely to have stuff in stock, though.
Dec 1994 -- Mark has left Just Games. It is getting
a bit harder to get our discount. Just so you know.
Another front in the war to find EuroGames is Ray Pfeiffer.
Ray imports games from Europe. He can be reached at R and D games, 6400
Baltimore National Pike #128. Baltimore, MD 21228. (410)-778-4280.
I'm not sure if that is a home or business phone, so don't call late
at night, please.
For hard to find domestic stuff, I recommend Crazy Egor's
You can put in a request for almost any game, and they'll contact you
when they find a copy, and tell you how much they want for it, and you're
under no obligation to buy. They also do current games, and claim to
have a discount, but I'm not sure how good it is. Egor is a nice
guy and good auctioneer. You can also send mail to Eric R. Derby,
derby@spanky.pas.rochester.edu. But don't bother him too much, please.
If you happen to be going to New York, the store address is
3047 West Henrietta Road, Rochester, NY 14623. I have no idea how
to get there.
If you like those Alan Moon games (see my review of
European Games
then you can write to Alan directly for them, which is cheaper than
getting them from Europe. Alan R. Moon , 2 Milton St., Beverly, MA 01915.
For you hard-core wargamers looking for the out of print, you might
try Weekend Warrior
(Phone 818-988-1441, Fax 818-988-1998) in Los Angeles.
It's run by Kenneth Fonarow, and some people on rec.games.board have mentioned
that he is "well known as the game industry's expert on out-of-print-games."
And, he supposedly has a good collection of inventory. I've never dealt with
him, so caveat emptor (as always, I guess).
I've chatted with a store over email!
Games By Mail, PO Box 8676
Station "T", Ottawa, Ontario, Canada K1G 3J1. (613) 523-2691. You can
email them at webber@gbm.ocunix.on.ca or games.bymail@genie.geis.com.
They had some Euro-Games too, and rather cheap. I got Formule De from
them, and they were cheap (no international phone calls, only email, not
to mention a good price) courteous, and processed my order quickly.
(They shipped the game almost instantly). A nice bonus is that they
pay shipping and it only takes about 2 weeks after they ship because
it's from Canada, and not Germany or the UK. Sadly, they don't have
many European Games.
Sundragon Games, which has a web page. You needn't even leave your
computer to order, you lazy schmoo. Click
Here.
It's not really a great choice, but you might want to try Cerebral
Hobbies 128 E Franklin St, Chapel Hill NC 27514. Phone is 919-929-0021,
Fax is 919-929-0607. Note that I'm putting this store on because a friend
of mine is part-owner. But it's a very nice store.
