program notes:

"Behind the Eyes" was composed for two members of Pittsburgh's contemporary quintet, Kamratōn – Anna Elder (soprano soloist) and Sarah Steranka (flute soloist), and for the Carnegie Mellon Contemporary Ensemble. The text is adapted from a poem of the same name by Matthew Galbraith, the composer's husband. Because of the freeze on live concerts during the COVID Era, it was released as a virtual premiere on YouTube in 2021.

The chamber ensemble version will be premiered in 2022 with Ms. Elder, Ms. Steranka, and the Carnegie Mellon Contemporary Ensemble, led by Daniel Nesta Curtis. The live performance will be accompanied with a "fixed media" soundtrack created by the composer, which includes a female trio (sung by Ms. Elder) and a virtual ensemble of ambient and percussive sounds created using the Ableton Live application. A video by Mr. Galbraith will accompany the performance.

  Behind the Eyes

In the world between
Words and dreams
Resting on the shore of your trancendental sea
It seems enough for now to feel
A calm to test the waters
And one more season hence
To swim sink surrender
Through your eternal peace
