Take a break from your studies and spend mid-semester break with the OGS. We're bringing the excitement of Warcraft III to the Carnegie Mellon University community with a massive two-day, two-on-two tournament.
This event will take place on Friday, October 18 and Saturday, October 19, 2002 in Hunt Library's Apple Orchard computer cluster. All registered teams should show up at 12:00 noon on Friday. The schedule for Saturday will be announced after Friday's matches.
A full event schedule, including maps to be used, will be made available to registered players.
The iMacs are 800 MHz G4s with 15-inch LCD screens at 1024x768 resolution, GeForce2 MX cards, and they run Warcraft III decently at lower graphics options. We tried to get Warcraft III running on the new IBM NetVistas in Wean, but their DirectX install was broken.
If you want to have sound during games, bring your own headphones. Make sure that the cord reaches the port on the back of the iMac's case. We will not have extra headphones on hand, and we will not allow players to use the built-in speakers for sound.
The iMacs are equipped with the standard optical one-button Apple Pro Mouse. It is recommended, but not required, that you bring your own mouse and mouse pad to use at the tournament. The Apple Pro Keyboard has two USB ports on it, and nearly all USB-compatible PC mice are supported by Mac OS X. We cannot guarantee compatibility with third-party peripherals, but you will be allowed to configure your own input device at your option.
The OGS Tournament Coordinator is Kris Popendorf. Please direct any rules-related questions to Kris.
Our current plan is to have teams of two players face off in 2v2 match play. Teams should register together, and designate a captain as their contact person. Note that the captain serves as the team's primary contact person in case of emergencies, but has no special role in match play.
We will open the tournament to all members of the campus community. This includes undergraduate students, graduate students, faculty, and staff members.
Pairings will be announced during the tournament. When teams are instructed to start, all players must join the specified game on the network within 5 minutes. If a team has not fully assembled by 5 minutes after their start time, they can either forfeit the match or begin to play shorthanded. Team members which arrive late are permitted to join games in progress, but we obviously discourage this practice.
Games will be monitored by referees. Any cheating or other unsportsmanlike conduct by a team member will be investigated by a referee. A breach of conduct by any team member will disqualify the entire team. Decisions by OGS referees are final and not subject to appeal. Examples of unsportsmanlike conduct include looking at opponents' monitors and acquiring detailed information about opponents' positions from third parties.
Technical difficulties during game play may result in a game being restarted or aborted. These decisions will be made by an OGS game official and are final.
No entry fee will be charged for playing in this event.
We will be purchasing pizza and drinks for the players. To cover these expenses, we will ask for a $7.00 cash contribution per team. This is an optional expense.
Please register early to ensure your spot in the tournament. Team composition can be changed after the tournament by having the captain send e-mail to ogs@andrew. Please note that teams must consist of two people. If you would like to join the OGS mailing list, please let us know so that we can keep you informed of new events.
This registration form is made possible by Terry Watt of NetDiving.
