Video Demonstration of the RoboKnee: An experimenter wears the knee and ankle exoskeleton bilaterally, then performs knee-bends while wearing a 55 kg backpack.
The exoskeleton senses the load on the feet and the configuration of the joints, then provides a torque to balance the torque of the experimenter's weight including the backpack.
The exoskeleton's assistance enabled the experimenter to perform this type of exercise for much longer than was possible without it.
The exoskeleton used significant electrical energy and computing to operate.
In this demonstration, power is supplied through cables, but demonstrations were also conducted using a backpack that contained a computer and large batteries.
