To make matters worse, I discovered a concrete slab 3' wide and 10' long in the far corner underneath the joists with sometimes only inches of earth between it and the brownstone ledge.

Removing this slab lying entirely on my belly or side was the hardest task in this whole project. But it had to be faced if I wanted to splice over or replace the joists damaged by termites, some of which are clearly visible in this image.
