Göreme Open-Air Museum Kızlar Monestery: Monks lived here from the 9^thC (Nuns lived in a similar structure ~100 yards away). This region of Cappadocia was covered with volcanic ash and later compacted into a soft "tufa" rock that is easily carved. Many churches and several whole cities were cut out of this layer.
