Istanbul Bosporus boat trip: The Fortress of Europe was built by Mehmet II in 1452 in preparation for his siege of Constantinople. He succeeded the following year; the Byzantine Empire was then no more; and the city became Istanbul. Today, there are ~15 M people in the city.
