88-348: Virtual Politics -- The Impact of the Internet on Political Discourse and Policy-Making. The rise of the Internet has had a tremendous impact on many areas of American life. The Internet has led to the rise of "virtual communities," altered the flow of commerce, changed the way in which we receive news and information, heightened concerns regarding personal privacy and accessibility, and provided new outlets for activities generally frowned upon in our society (such as pornography and gambling). These issues all raise an important political question: to what extent, and by what means, can (or should) a society exert influence over largely decentralized systems such as the Internet? Drawing on principles found in the social science literature, this course seeks to address this fundamental question through a study of the Internet and its impact on various dimensions of political life. Course Documents: Here students can access the course syllabus, schedule, class assignments, and other materials regarding official course policies. Announcements: All class announcements are posted on this page. Students are encouraged to check this page on a regular basis. Links to Course Topics: There is a vast array of materials available on the web which will be of interest to students. I've collected a number of relevant links (by no means exhaustive) and listed them by categories. Readings: I have collected a series of readings in some type of electronic format (HTML, .pdf, etc.) and have posted them here for students to download at their convenience.
These pages are relevant for the Spring 1999 semester. |
