Research

My lab uses molecular genetics and high end optical microscopy to investigate pattern repair during Drosophila embryogenesis. We are also developing new genomic, proteomic, and imaging technologies to assay qualitative and quantitative changes in gene expression. (more)

Research

Gastrulation in Drosophila involves a number of cell shape changes, the first of which is the formation of the ventral furrow, which eventually leads to the formation of the mesoderm. The process of ventral furrow formation takes only about 15 minutes. The idea that the proteasome plays a key role in this process stems from the observations that analysis of the difference-proteins between ventralized versus lateralized embryos resulted in identification of three proteasomal subunits, as well as the result that ventral furrow formation seems to be inhibited on introduction of a proteasomal inhibitor, lactacystin. I am interested in understanding the role of the proteasome in affecting cell shape changes during gastrulation in Drosophila.
