In the early 1920s a new St. Ann's Church was built at 820 Centre Street in Freeland, and a few years later the Woodside church was demolished. The new church was never completed above the ground level, and so the church interior was at the basement level. A brand new church was built on the same site in 1967 and it still stands today, although now it houses a new parish, Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, comprising the four historical Roman Catholic parishes of Freeland: St. Ann's, St. Anthony's, St. Casimir's and St. John Nepomucene. Here are five views of the original St. Ann's Church in Woodside. More views can be seen using the link at top of this page. These first two photos were taken by Ed Merrick in the 1960s, and thank you to Ed for taking the photos and for sharing them with us. The photo at right was taken from upstairs in the Borough Building. The photo of the rectory comes to us from Marion Gabuzda Boyle Denion. I took the one of the beautifully decorated doorway to St. Ann's High School a few days before the building was demolished. And here is the beautiful, modern church that replaced the basement church. At right is the cornerstone on the rectory / office that gives the dates 1871 and 1931, referencing the Woodside past and the relocation to Freeland. |
