Frequently Asked Questions

We'll be using an inquiry-based approach in this course. Rather than beginning a topic with lecture, you will first have the chance to discover some of the content on your own. The hope is that this will lead a deeper understanding of the course material.

You are welcome to work on your own during lecture activities if you prefer. I suggest you at least try working with your classmates for the first couple weeks to see if you find the discussion helpful. You will be expected to collaborate with your groups during recitation worksheets.

I will not allow for any makeup work in the course unless you have a verifiable excuse. There is flexibility built into the course to account for any absences. Please see the "Course Policies" section on our course syllabus for details.

You are welcome and encouraged to attend any of the office hours listed in the course syllabus. We also have supplemental instruction available for this course (see the SI page for the current schedule), and there is peer tutoring available through the student academic success center.

No. Instead of giving midterm exams, we'll be taking short exam prep assessments in odd-numbered weeks during recitation. My hope is this will relax some of the time pressure, will help to reduce some of the stress involved with taking high-stakes exams, and will give you plenty of practice to prepare for the final exam.

Lecture recordings, notes, and in-class activites can be found in the "Pages" tab of our Canvas site. As per university requirements, this material must only be available to students currently enrolled in the course.

I prefer first you use my first name, Elisa (phonetic pronunciation: "ee-lee-sah") but Dr. Bellah is also perfectly okay. Whichever you are more comfortable with works for me.

You are always welcome and encouraged to speak with me in office hour or to email me at ebellah@andrew.cmu.edu with any questions or feedback about the course. I will also check this anonymous survey each week if you prefer to communicate questions or feedback anonymously. Note that I will respond to anonymous questions by posting an announcement to the whole class.
