To help inform the community about the many archival resources available
in western Pennsylvania, the Curator's Coalition of Pittsburgh is
sponsoring a photographic exhibit for Archives Week, in conjunction with
the Mid-Atlantic Regional Archives Conference (MARAC). Archives Week is
an annual observance of the importance of archival and historical
records to people's lives.
Archives ensure the identification, preservation and use of the nation's
historical record and documentary heritage for present and future
generations. Western Pennsylvania archives collect, preserve and
provide access to a wide variety of historical records, including church
and family papers, government documents, personal manuscripts, and
organizational, institutional and business records. Collections may
also include photographs, maps, drawings, newspapers, audio-visual
material and other items. Genealogists, historians, students and anyone
interested in information about the past can benefit from the valuable
primary resources in archives.
In all, twelve participating institutions have contributed photographs
from their collections that will be displayed at the five institutions
marked with an asterisk (*) until October 30, 1998. We invite you to
visit the exhibiting archives to see the Archives Week display, or to
drop by any of the regional archives and learn more about their
collections.
