How did you start playing ultimate?

I played soccer (and some basketball) in high school, but didn't want to continue playing either sport in college. I did want to be active in some way, so when I saw frisbee recruiting on the cut during orientation week, I thought it would be a good idea to join. I also had a soccer teammate in high school who started playing frisbee in college and really enjoyed it, so I thought I might enjoy it too.

Laying out at Buffalo for the first time to catch a disk in the endzone.

I started playing in my undergrad, with my college team in India. I really enjoyed the sport and the community was so welcoming, I never left. Went on to captain my team and loved how people were always so respectful of everyone, despite how competitive the sport got.

How did you start playing ultimate?

Junior year a teacher at my high school who coaches a local adult women's club team was trying to start a school team. I went to my first tournament after playing for a month (open division, with 9 people, only 2 of which had played in a real game before...), and promptly decided that frisbee was more fun than soccer (despite getting dunked on by the state champs). Since my school's team decided not to play competitively, I also played for various local school and regional teams my senior year, and the Bay Area YCC team over the summer.

Favorite memory from being on the Mellons?

Spending hours goofing around after IMs with everyone that got dragged into playing. My abs hurt from laughing so hard.

"This is more of an at tournament ""meal"" but if you take a bite of apple, then a bite of pickle, and another bite of apple, while imagining an apple salad with vinaigrette dressing, it is one of the most delicious things after a long hot point. also welches"

A friend and I decided to go to a scrimmage together, both having zero frisbee experience, and it was overwhelming to say the least, but I instantly loved the community and how welcoming they were, so I joined the Mellons!

Getting food for 20+ people during natties at Costco and deciding to use the self checkout, then reaching the weight limit with only two items left. The Costco employee said she had never seen this happen before.

I started playing ultimate because my twin brother, Sky, needed someone to throw with. By the time I came to college, I had been throwing for four years and wanted to give the sport a shot, and I am so glad that I did.

Favorite memory from being on the Mellons?

My favorite memory is when we beat Pitt at the showcase game this past fall. Our team was clicking, our throws were accurate, and the mood was electric! It was so much fun having so much of our team and the ultimate frisbee community there to support us. Bringing home the win wasn't too bad either.

I didn't have many ultimate friends in the beginning, and learning how to play in the off-season was tough, but I stuck with the sport and it ended up being one of the best decisions of my life :)
