History
of Freeland, Pa. Franklin N. Becker and the Jeddo-Highland Coal Company - 2 |
|
On these pages:
This is the second of four pages in Frank Becker and the Jeddo-Highland Coal Company power plant in the 1930s. The information comes from his great-grandson, Pierre-Yves Vachot. This page contains photos and blueprints relating to the power plant. Pierre-Yves asked if we might be interested in having scans of the power plant photos. The answer was yes please, because they show views that will interest many local history enthusiasts. Pierre-Yves wrote: I just received the scans from the pictures. Some are from the construction of the power plant, some are from other projects, I'm sending you everything, who knows, maybe you will come across someone who knows what the other pictures are. He added: It looks like The Jeddo Highland Coal Co was doing R&D work. I'm wondering where the R&D took place. Charlie Gallagher comments: There is very little available on the Jeddo # 5 complex, as this was the last great breaker complex built by the Jeddo-Highland Coal Company. There was a large fire there in the 1953 and again in the 1970’s (although it was abandoned long before that). Absolutely nothing exists today, it’s all a reclaimed field. POWER PLANT JEDDO-HIGHLAND NO. 5 BOILERS IN THE POWER PLANT Pierre-Yves Vachot: Last night I also found out a couple of details about the power-plant. I believe the two pictures with all the tubings are the boiler room, and the the boiler is of the "four-drum stirling boiler" type "or a "three-drum stirling boiler." Those boilers were commercialized at the time and available in the USA. Here are the boilers at the Jeddo powerplant. The boilers were made by the Lovell Manufacturing Co. and Union Iron Works, Erie, Pa. MORE BLUEPRINTS Tobacco barn heater Heat exchanger This was for a central heating system, allowing the use of a coal burner and other means of heating water (not the same system as the stove associated with the R&D house and the patent). The blueprint at left is unmarked, while the two at right are marked up, possibly for a patent drawing. |
