Center for the Arts in Society Special Topic: "Human Rights in the Arts & Humanities" (Madelaine Hron) What do contemporary writers, artists or filmmakers tell us about human rights? What does it mean to be human? What rights should be granted to every human being our present global age? How might the arts and humanities engage with the discourse of human rights? These are some of the questions that we will examine in this course, in a cross-cultural and interdisciplinary perspective. We will explore the notion of human rights throughout time, in different cultural, philosophical and religious traditions and examine various discourses of human rights defining the twentieth century (labor rights, civil rights, women's rights, children's rights, etc.). Focusing on regions all over the world (Africa, South America, Eastern Europe, Middle East), we will delve into such topics as justice, peace, security, health, global citizenship, as well as censorship, imprisonment, punishment, terrorism, violence, poverty, torture, war or genocide. Throughout the course, we will survey a wide variety of humanistic disciplines (painting, architecture, music, cinema, history, literature, dance, politics, photography, sculpture, philosophy), read texts by major world authors (such as Solzhenistyn, Kundera, Gordimer, Nasreen, Alegria) and watch award winning films and documentaries (for example _Kolyma_, _Dirty Pretty Things_, _The Circle_, _Weather Underground_).
