It has become clear that the classical concept and sociology of culture, which runs from Marx, Durkheim, and Weber in the 19th century to the Frankfurt School, Pierre Bourdieu and Raymond Williams in the 20th, needs updating and revision in light of recent developments in globalized media and cross-cultural production. Among the readings for this course will be Karl Marx on ideology and commodification, Matthew Arnold on culture and class, Max Weber on the cultural powers of religion, Walter Benjamin on art and media, Theodor Adorno on the culture industry, Raymond Williams on cultural superstructures, Pierre Bourdieu on cultural fields, Edward Said on culture and imperialism, and Arjun Appadurai on globalized ethnoscapes and mediascapes. | |
