This course covers the fundamental physics of atomization and sprays with disintegration of liquid jets and sheets as related to the design of atomizers. Sprays are characterized by drop size and velocity distribution. Computational fluid dynamics is used to predict fluid flow and spray dynamics. Instrumentation includes imaging, laser diffraction and phase Doppler particle analysis. Applications include fuel injection for combustors, spray drying, coatings and nebulizers for inhalation therapy.
