| | 79-361 The Film Festival: Vietnam War Films
The Film Festival is an annual offering which rotates between the Departments of English, History and Modern Languages, with a different annual theme selected by the Instructor. A core element every year is the study of the Film Festival itself as a global cultural and economic phenomenon. Students in the course will also participate in the planning, promotion and running of a public film festival based on the annual theme and presented to the Carnegie Mellon and Pittsburgh film communities in McConomy Auditorium. Students in this course will plan and carry out the 2004 CMU Film Festival, tentatively scheduled for April 23-25, 2004. The theme this year will be "The Vietnam War in Film," and may include both feature films and documentaries about the war and its aftermath. Students in this course will preview and choose the films to be shown. They will also coordinate publicity and logistics for the festival. The course will meet for one hour on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays for planning and discussion, as well as one evening per week for film screenings. Assignments will include a number of readings about the Vietnam War and its portrayal in films, and students will write a short paper at the conclusion of the festival about their experiences planning and putting on the festival. Attendance at the entire three-day festival will be mandatory. Concurrent or previous enrollment in 79-232, "Vietnam: America's Lost War" would be helpful, but is not required. | |
