The Renaissance and Baroque periods provide a convenient chronological grouping that allows the study of architecture from the revival of classicism in early 15th century Italy until the fundamental changes brought about by the 18th century rise of the Industrial Revolution throughout Europe. Students will address major architects, buildings cities and texts of this period while also considering political, social, religious, philosophical and scientific influences on architecture and urban design. Geographic scope will focus on Italy, while including France, England and other parts of Europe. Class structure will be divided to include 2 consecutive lectures followed by a seminar discussion with close reading of selected texts.
