This course introduces the student to the methodology by which a material can be successfully chosen for a given application from the various classes (metals, ceramics and glasses, electronic materials, polymers and composites). Criteria for selection include processing methods, fabrication of materials systems, costs, specifications and standards, environmental considerations, ethics, and substitutions for strategic materials. Common causes of failure and methods of prevention will be discussed. Each student will have the opportunity for an original paper with specilization in a material class of choice.
