| | 48-305 Architecture Design Studio: Advanced Construction
This semester is concerned with the detailed development and refinement of an architectural design as informed by the technical knowledge of structural systems, enclosure systems and the process of construction. The student is expected to articulate concepts and develop designs with more precision and in greater detail than done in previous studios and courses. The model that has been implemented to most effectively teach this body of knowledge is the use of prerequisite courses, a studio lecturer/ coordinator and a concurrent lecture series. The studio lecturer/ coordinator assists the students with the application and synthesis of the knowledge from pre-requisite technology courses and will be available for design reviews on a regularly scheduled basis. The studio begins with a week-long class-wide workshop. The workshop has four objectives: 1) to expand ones personal catalog of significant buildings, 2) to interpret solutions from analysis of source material, 3) to generate design alternatives, 4) to evaluate and formalize design alternatives. In addition to criteria related to the development of design skills appropriate to one's sixth semester of the studio sequence, the following criteria are an explicit part of the evaluation of the student work: aesthetics, structural system, enclosure system, material selection, constructability and presentation. | |
