This is the second course in a two-part professionally oriented course sequence covering a variety of important problems in solid mechanics. Topics covered typically include anisotropy, energy methods and finite elements, contact problems, fracture mechanics and plasticity. As in the first course in the sequence, emphasis is placed on not only mechanics theory and classical solutions, but also on their application in finite element modeling of applied engineering problems. This course builds on concepts from the first course, so that it or a similar course on elasticity theory is a prerequisite. 4 hrs. lec. Prerequisite: 24-751 and 24-701, or permission of the instructor.
