On Wednesday, hundreds of students filled the second floor of the University Center for the fall activities fair. More than 160 student organizations took part, all recruiting new members in this semi-annual event.
The fair is traditionally held on the CFA lawn, but because of rain, it was moved to Rangos Ballroom and the Peter, Wright, and McKenna rooms. Because of space limitations, each table was shared by two organizations. Walkways were crowded and conditions were cramped as many students filtered in after classes, especially in the first hour of the fair.
"This is the first time in three or four years that it's been [held] inside," said Heather Andring, a student activities coordinator. "Since then, the number of organizations has grown."
Jessica Tsang, a first-year CIT student, went to learn more about campus organizations but found the arrangement difficult to navigate.
"It [was] too unorganized, but there [was] a good choice of things," she said.
Despite the chaos, organizations didn't seem to have a problem recruiting new members.
Nathan Baran and Larry Suarez, juniors in CIT and HSS respectively, manned the table for Filmmaking at Carnegie Mellon. They reported a good flow of people and enjoyed the location. Their organization has plans to grow considerably this year, and they were happy with the number of people who expressed interest. However, they identified one problem that all organizations face after the activities fair:
"It's not hard to get people to sign up. The hard part is to get them to stay on," said Baran.
