Construction on Hunt Library's roof will continue for a few more weeks. Earlier this year, Facilities Management Services (FMS) decided that Hunt Library was due for a new roof. This decision was prompted in part by leakage that was occuring when it rained, particularly through the fourth floor roof in the area surrounding the perimeter of the fifth floor Penthouse. FMS contracted Stringent, Inc. for the job. Work was originally expected to be completed in September, but troublesome weather – especially last weekend – caused delays. Work on the roof began in mid-June.
Stringent constructed scaffolding for non-disruptive access to the roof and a debris chute for easy disposal of the old roofing material. The scaffolding base and chute are on the loading dock on the Frew Street side of Hunt Library.
Stringent anticipated that the noise from debris traveling down the chute would not be disruptive, as it would only be used during the first two hours of the 7 am – 3:30 pm work day. But a Hunt employee whose office window is located next to the chute, commented that, "When they send stuff down [the chute], I feel like I am living under the roller coaster at Coney Island."
Work is being done in sectionsto reduce the risk of leakage during construction. As roof sections are torn off, they are replaced with new roofing material. After the initial inspection, stones were removed from the roof and prep work was done.Workers started from the middle of the roof and moved on to the perimeter flashing details. The flood coat and gravel top were installed in late August. Sump drains, caulking of metal building skin, and a safety railing were installed, and a hatch cover was repaired.
Stringent expects to have the work completed within the next few weeks.
