Did you know that you can buy discounted tickets to all sorts of Pittsburgh cultural events right at the University Center Info Desk? Ask anyone manning the desk for the student rate ticket book and check out what's going on this season at Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, Pittsburgh Opera, Pittsburgh Public Theater, Pittsburgh Musical Theater, and more! You can get most tickets for half price, and some with even deeper discounts.
All you have to do is fill out a form at the info desk requesting a ticket for the show you want to see. You'll need to provide a check or credit card number, and then voila – pick up your ticket at the theater box office on the day of the show. More likely than not, though, you won't be sitting in the center orchestra, as many of the theaters have designated discounted areas. But it's a well-known fact that in Pittsburgh, every seat has a great view. You just might not have as much legroom as the old folks downstairs.
Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra is one of the oldest and best-known orchestras in the country, and this year it became the first American orchestra to play for the Pope. The Symphony's Mellon Grand Classics are available to you for only $12 a piece. Dance Council tickets are $10.50, the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust shows range from $10.50 to $15.50, and the PNC Broadway in Pittsburgh shows are $27. A Broadway show on Broadway can often go for $90! What a steal.
If you don't feel like buying through Carnegie Mellon, you don't have to. The Pittsburgh Public Theater offers $12 tickets to all of its shows to full-time students and people under 26 years old (on Fridays and Saturdays, the rate is only available at the door). Rush tickets are available to all Dance Council, Ballet Theatre, Opera, and Musical Theater performances. Show your student ID at the box office one hour prior to showtime and get an available ticket at half price ($12-18). There's a limit of one ticket per ID, so if you're going in a group, make sure everyone comes prepared.
