The general perspective of the course will be the differing roles of language in literate and nonliterate communities. The topics to be included are: universals of language structure; language and perception; language and writing; and language issues in complex, especially multilingual, societies. Grades are based on one or possibly two term papers and on performance on quizzes. Enrollment restricted to graduate students.
