What’s your favorite tournament Mr. Yuk has gone to?

My favorite tournament was 2018 Tally Classic. Mr. Yuk came to take names as we were seeded well below our potential - and we knew it. We made a statement in our pool as we took UMass to universe and upset Central Florida on universe, qualifying Yuk for the bracket. After an emotional loss to UNC Wilmington, where we led for most of the game, Mr. Yuk broke seed and finished 5th, beating Georgia Tech and South Carolina. Mr. Yuk really lived up to its aspirations and this tourney filled us with excitement for the remainder of the season.

What was your first experience with ultimate frisbee at CMU?

Born and raised in the Burgh, I started playing the friz junior year of high school when my volleyball friends finally convinced me to come to a practice. I was hooked and never looked back. I was so eager to play for Mr. Yuk that I looked them up and messaged the social chair, Foster, asking how to get involved. I was added to the email list before I even graduated high school and couldn't wait to start playing when I arrived at CMU. Fast forward to O-week when I skipped a bunch of the "required" orientation events and just played frisbee on the Cut, meeting all my new lifelong friends.

Was or is there an ultimate player you look up to? (on or off Yuk)

I've always looked up to Joey Pickens. His work ethic and drive to win has never ceased to amaze and inspire me. Whenever I was feeling low on motivation, I would just watch Joey play, and I was ready to push that extra 10% harder. As soon as he got the disc, I knew he was looking to send it deep to me, so I drew up that extra energy and pushed myself to make the play.

What was your favorite memory of Mr. Yuk (off-field)?

The many, many board game nights with a bunch of my favorite nerds (I'm looking at you Teddi Incredi and Scottie Buckets). Board games is now one of my passions because of this team.

If you didn’t do ultimate at CMU, what would you have done?

Been a big boring nerd with nothing to live for.

What is your favorite memory of Mr. Yuk (on-field)?

At day two of Fall Easterns I was guarding a player who had just faked deep and came under. I was already a little tired but was right on his tail and when the throw came up I knew it would be close. That's when I heard Eric Li from our sideline screaming "BID RICCI BID" or something and I closed my eyes and clumsily bid as far as I could with my arms outstretched in front of the guy. The disc ended up getting caught in the wind and thrown way over both me and the guy I was guarding, going to nobody in the end. Only when I was lying facedown in the grass did it strike me how hilarious that sequence of events must've looked from the sideline as tons of raucous laughter filled my ears. At that point, I did what anyone in my shoes would've done at the time--I got up, dabbed, and went to go play some killer D-line offense baby.

Do you have a favorite cheer or celebration?

Although I am a big fan and supporter of the disc-flip-into-dab-spike combination, the “All Hail King Richard” celebration is my favorite one.

What was your first experience with Mr. Yuk?

The games after playfair during o-week, it was incredibly fun and addicting! I remember throwing hucks with Jasper Tom afterwards and I shanked every single one, making him run from one side of the cut to the other continually.

How can you tell if I'm in the zone?

When I get in the zone I’m very positive and high energy. I’ll be making plays and feeling confident on the field and cheering for my teammates when I’m on the sideline.

What is your "go-to" move on the field?

I’ve come to love the polar op cut, and my favorite throw is a high release backhand into space for the score 😫

What is your pre-game ritual?

Taking some time by myself to really focus and be serious gives me the intensity I want during a game or tournament

What is something your teammates probably don't know about you?

I am one of five children in my family, and the first one to start playing ultimate!

If you didn’t do ultimate at CMU, what would you be doing?

I’d probably be rock climbing all the time

It's Buffalo, fall '17. Joey Pickens calls "Down! Down! Down!" on a throw that it looks like his offender won't grab. Layout grab by Joey's guy, he hits Joey with "Down my ass." as he gets up. Joey then handblocks him on the throw, picks it up and throws a thumber to double-covered Forman for the score. "Down my ass." says Joey as he walks away.

Ryan "Bryan" Harty. A lad with a dream. A top chef with a penchant for big ham. He lived in Foster's room before Foster ever did (it should be called Bryan's room). An expert volcano insurance salesman. Taught himself to lay out, and probably also to count to 6000. Liaison to Agent Upmy, Founder of the Space Force, and always able to keep his cool in a heated game of stack cup, even when his freakin' teammates keep freakin' breaking the freakin' rules. CMU CYPHERS

What is your favorite memory of Mr. Yuk (on-field)?

Joey Pickens yelling “Down,” being wrong, footblocking the guy who caught it, and throwing a shitty thumber so this unfortunate opponent had enough time to recover and get dunked on by Forman

Bio

I came into CMU having casually played ultimate a few times in high school and barely being able to throw a flick. Needless to say, I improved a lot and am now hoping to help Yuk on the field as a cutter and off the field as a core member. When I'm not doing ultimate stuff (not very often) you can find me working as an EXCEL leader for physics, jamming out to disco music, and getting called cute by my teammates.

What’s your favorite tournament Mr. Yuk has gone to?

Regionals my freshman year was super fun! We peaked at the right time as a team and had a shot in the game to go on our home turf. Even though we didn't make natties, those last few games were so hype and I can't wait to get back there next year!

Did you have a pre-game or tournament ritual?

Listening to Earth, Wind & Fire before a game always helps me get into the right headspace. The music is just so fun, and I play a lot better when I'm having fun.

What is your "go-to" move on the field?

The full sprint break-side under to deep cut to force-side under. Rinse and repeat and you'll get wide open since your defender probably wishes he was playing any other sport than ultimate.

Did you have a favorite cheer or celebration?

My new favorite celebration is the flock of birds. After you score, run around and flap your arms like wings and hope your teammates join you so you look less foolish. This is the celly that got me into the QCTU tournament highlights video so you know it's legit. Honorable mentions include: rocking the baby, naptime, and (of course) the staredown.

What was your favorite memory of Mr. Yuk (off-field)?

Ric making an absolute fool of himself at the mixer with the Pitt women's team... no comment on how it turned out in the end though #oopsie

What is your "go-to" move on the field?

The double move. Just gotta chop your feet, turn your hips 90 degrees and stare your defender in the eyes. If that doesn't break their ankles, I don't know what will.

Most memorable quote from a teammate?

"A little rain never hurt nobody." (Hail the size of almonds was falling from the sky)

What was your favorite memory of Mr. Yuk (on-field)?

After Tally Classic in 2018 my body was so beat up I had to lie down for a solid 20 minutes because everything hurt too much to move. We had played UMass to 2 points and were up 8-3 on UNCW. Even though we didn't prevail in either game, I was happy because it felt like we had finally made it to the big leagues. Mr. Yuk was officially good.

What was your favorite memory of Mr. Yuk (off-field)?

The ride down to Tally Classic in 2018. Just to give you a taste: the car broke down and we had to be ferried by two drivers in sedans (one of which had no seats so we had to sit on the floor of the car) who had some crazy experiences with brass knuckles, cocaine, and hookers that they were more than happy to share with us.

Was or is there an ultimate player you look up to? (on or off Yuk)

It's gotta be Jasper. The man is a workhorse and always gives 100%.

Do you have a favorite cheer or celebration?

Ain't nobody fuckin' with my Kwang Gang.

If you didn’t do ultimate at CMU, what would you be doing?

What was your first experience with ultimate frisbee at CMU?

Supposedly I was skied by Jasper when I first played pickup on the Cut. This of course is nonsense given that I have skied Jasper every other time we have matched up.

What first got you into ultimate frisbee?

I first heard about Ultimate Frisbee in high school gym class, but we never actually learned any rules except for not being allowed to move when you had the disc. We only had enough people interested to play 3 on 3 and none of us knew how to properly throw a disc. When I got to CMU I was ready to play club volleyball because that’s what I played in high school, but once I witnessed Ultimate After Playfair and saw Scott Shepard skying everyone and people catching discs with crazy layout grabs I thought, “woah this sport is super cool!”. Once Brian Duff taught me how to throw a flick and I learned more about the rules, I was hooked. Also shout-out to lifting buddy The Ton for getting me in the gym and teaching me how to lift!

What concept/drill are you most excited to teach to Mr. Yuk?

I pride myself on my defensive knowledge and ability to incorporate lots of different looks over the course of a game and season. Whether it’s person defense or some kind of junk/zone it’s great giving players so many different options for all the different types of situations you can be put in.

Most underrated tip for success at college ultimate tournaments?

Fundamentals are key. I have learned so much playing the game, but even more in the last year after helping to coach CMU last year and getting the chance to coach Temper this past summer that I have a deeper understanding about how important strong fundamentals are in order to get a team to the highest level of competition. Also, bring lots of extra socks. Halfway through the first day at a tournament a fresh pair of socks can go a long way to keep you feeling refreshed and re-energized to play in those 3rd and 4th games in a single day.

Flexbox can be tricky ;)
